14k-Mile 1983 Audi Ur Quattro | PCARMARKET

By 1982 the European Rally Phenomenon had spread worldwide, and the Americans were mesmerized by this raw style racing.  Audi had started to dominate this scene and used it as a platform to show off their latest technology and product that was going to dominate the world in this class of racing.  With famous drivers like Michele Mouton, Walter Rohrl, and the only US World Rally Champion John Buffum racing for the factory team, it was now inevitable that the combination of the Audi Quattro and these drivers, that they would soon dominate the world in Rally Racing.

With their introduction of the most sophisticated All Wheel Drive System Quattro, Audi was proving their dominance in the racing world they needed to start the same trend on the streets.  With the introduction of new Audi Quattro in Europe in 1980, it was time for its debut in the USA.  With a total of 664 cars produced for the USA market and only 238 1983 Ur Quattros imported, that makes this an extremely rare car.  Not only limited production, but a hand build car from a large manufacturer that had striking lines with its integrated bumpers, front and rear valances and the ever famous Boxed Flared Fenders.

Officially, the model name was simply "Quattro", although the graphics on the car, confusingly, refer to the four-wheel drive system and use a lowercase "q". The word "quattro" with the lowercase "q" is used to refer to either the Audi AWD system, or any AWD version of an Audi automobile. To avoid confusion, it is also commonly referred to as the Ur-Quattro (the "Ur-" prefix is a German augmentative used, in this case, to mean "original".  The power plant was originally a 2.1 L (2144 cc), SOHC, 10 valve turbo charge and intercooled straight-5 cylinder producing 203 PS (149 kW).  This was a very unique way of getting the power they needed along with the efficiency that they wanted.

This particular car was produced in February 1982 as a 1983 USA Model and shipped into the USA in January of 1983.  It was originally purchased on April 26, 1983 by Jon D. Silverman of Harrison, NY.  The car was sold by Porsche Audi of Bay Ridge located in Brooklyn, NY.  The car was enjoyed for the first 14,000 miles by the original owner at which time on December 14, 1988 it was purchased by John Smith, owner of Shokan Coachworks located in West Shokan, NY.

Shokan Coachworks was an extremely well know Audi only parts supplier, and John Smith had an affinity for Ur Quattos.  This car was his pride and joy.  On the day of purchase, it was put in storage at his facility and for the next 32 years, that is where it sat.  Never really driven, but always cared for, Mr. Smith just loved sitting on the couch and looking at this car.  He and I are extremely good friend, and I am also a collector of Ur Quattros, so we spent many days looking at this car along with other and I have personally known this car since he purchased it in 1988.  I have included a picture of the day I picked it up from Shokan Coachworks about 1 years ago.  There is also a picture of this car and my personal Amazon Blue Ur Quattro stacked together on my lift.  All included in the gallery.

The car is a true survivor with an actual 14,090 miles on it today.  It has never had any paint work and is completely original car.  There are meter pictures of the paint in the gallery.  Then interior is also completely original, has never been redone, redyed and shows beautifully.  The only aftermarket items is the extremely rare ABT Gauge Cluster that sits on top of the dash.  This was a dealer installed option upon delivery and ABT at the time was an approved aftermarket vendor for Audi.

Prior to my purchasing the car from Mr. Smith, he went through the fuel system. Took the tank out, had it cleaned, put a new fuel pump and filter in and took the injectors out and cleaned them as well and flushed all the lines.  It also had a fresh oil and filter change, along with coolant and brake fluid flush as well.

If you know what this car is and know how rare they truly are, then finding a true 14,000 mile survivor is an impossible feet and probably one of the last cars that is not only this original but has this few miles on it.  Truly a unique item for a collector of these fine automobiles.
